As smoky season really starts, here are a few cost-effective tips to keep ourselves healthy. It's dangerous when smoke gets into our homes — and it's surprisingly easy for it to happen.

Even a well-built home can leak air through gaps around windows, doors, and walls. During smoky season those gaps become a direct pipeline for PM2.5 particles — the fine particles that cause the real health damage — straight into your living space.

The good news: sealing gaps is cheap, takes very little time, and makes a measurable difference in indoor air quality.

For windows you keep closed all the time, or visible cracks — simple packaging tape from any hardware store does the job. It's airtight, cheap, and easy to remove later.

For bigger openings, you can cut a piece of polythene sheet and tape it over the opening.
วิธีหาช่องรั่ว: ในวันที่ควันหนาแน่น ลองเอามือลูบช้าๆ ตามขอบประตูและหน้าต่าง บริเวณที่รู้สึกว่ามีลมเล็ดลอดเข้ามา นั่นคือจุดที่ต้องอุด
Tip: Run your hand slowly along window and door frames on a smoky day. Anywhere you feel cool air coming in is a gap worth sealing.

Be creative! If you have an air-only opening that will be in and out of use — such as an extractor fan — maybe velcro can be your friend. Get a roll of velcro and put one side around the hole, one side around a polythene sheet cut to fit, and you have a removable seal!
For permanent gaps, you might want a more permanent solution. There are a wide range of options — epoxy, acrylic, silicone sealants and more. Go down to your local hardware store, or have a chat with your local handyperson.

If a door or window is in regular use, rigid tape won't work — you need something that compresses and seals when it closes. Foam tape pressed into the frame does exactly this.

All of these together make a big difference — and they let your air purifier work much more efficiently, since it's not constantly fighting fresh smoke coming in.

A commercial air purifier is essentially just a HEPA filter with a fan sucking air through it. That's all. You can build one yourself for a fraction of the cost.
สิ่งที่ต้องใช้: ไส้กรอง HEPA หนึ่งอัน และพัดลมที่มีขนาดใกล้เคียงกัน ติดเทปให้สนิทรอบขอบ ไม่ให้มีช่องเหลือ
What you need: A HEPA replacement filter and a fan that covers the filter face. Tape the fan securely to the filter with no air gaps — so all the air has to pass through the filter, not around it.

ตั้งไว้ในห้องที่ใช้เวลามากที่สุด เปิดระดับต่ำตลอดเวลาจะได้ผลดีกว่าเปิดแรงเป็นช่วงๆ
Buy a HEPA replacement filter (see the link below).
Find a fan whose face roughly matches the filter size.
Tape the fan to the filter with packaging tape. No gaps — every gap is air bypassing the filter entirely.
Point the fan so it pulls air through the filter (air in through the filter, out through the fan).
Place it in the room you use most. Run it on low continuously rather than high occasionally.
